Beth Marston never imagined she’d be in this position as she approached her thirtieth birthday on her own with a four-year-old daughter, working as a cleaner in other people’s houses. What happened to the dreams she shared with Daniel, the love of her life, when they were at university together with the world at their feet? Come to that, what happened to Daniel, to make him fall out of love with her and leave her for another woman?
Beth is sure she’s never going to trust another man. Her child, and her best friend Fay, are all she needs now. Besides, she has enough on her plate trying to make ends meet, and getting perhaps a little too involved with the lives of the people whose homes she cleans.
But when she falls out with Fay, everything suddenly seems to come crashing down. And if someone really wonderful came into her life now, to make it all better, would Beth really be able to resist?
Other People Lives eBook Sheila Norton
At first, I really liked Beth. I thought she was a "straight shooter, gets stuff down, tells the truth" sort of girl. I liked how she made it very clear to Fay that she wouldn't tolerate Fay using her as cover and cut things off with her. She was mostly amusing, reading about her life and the lives of the people she cleaned houses for...and I thought I was in the midst of a great story. But then around 60% my opinion of Beth dropped. She then turns around and starts engaging in behavior similar to Fay (the same reasons why she cut ties with her best friend)...so that makes her what? A hypocrite? By 70% I came to the conclusion that neither Beth nor Fay believed in the sanctity of marriage vows, not caring who they were hurting as long as they were happy. Who cares that Simon was devastated? So instead, the author decides to turn him into an unfeeling, uncaring jerk for leaving, then a doormat for coming back. I mean, I guess it was his own fault that he was ten years older than Fay and was boring. Serves him right! < / sarcasm> Too bad. He was my favorite character in the whole book.
Don't even get me started on Sarah and Alex. The situation between them and Beth was so ridiculous and unbelievable, I skimmed to the end. So apparently the moral of this story is, you can cheat on your partner, treat the people in your life you profess to 'love' like **** because in the end, who cares who you hurt as long as you're happy.
If these are the sorts of characters this author writes about, with no redeeming qualities whatsoever or feelings or remorse for the hurt they caused, I'm not interested in reading anything else from her. I honestly regret reading this one now.
